OH. RIGHT.

So because this is my personal lab book on daily life experiments as much as it is a blog, i’ll note this here for the inevitable next time:

Is the machine skipping big swathes of stitches while at the same time having rampant birds-nest-ing? You have the needle in backwards, ya bloomin’ idjit.

Madeleine’s needle goes in with the flat side TO THE RIGHT. Not the left.

I’m going to go back to the sewing corner to make amends to my machine, while trying to ignore the sound of my beloved grandmother spinning in her grave.

The bright side: I have the zipper in, now! And since it’s only quarter-to-ten, i might get most of the rest of the skirt finished before bed. Also, at least Crabby Media’s tablecloth for the Portland Zine Symposium is finished now, and a fine piece of over-sewn (i was testing, alright??) sewing it is, too.

new-old sundress

I am wearing a dress! A sundress!! Gma made this for me probably 20+ years ago and Mom just mailed it to me from PA the other day — a special request i made because recently i’ve been thinking about making sundresses (i keep seeing neat cotton prints that would make wonderful sundresses). “But then i’d have to pick out a sundress pattern,” i thought to myself. Fortunately i realized that i do have a sundress pattern — the one Gma used to make this particular dress. Except the dress was still hanging in the closet of my old room at my grandparents’s house. Happily, Mom was willing to mail it so i could see if it still fits me and if i still like it well enough to make a billion more.

Surprisingly, for a dress i’m pretty sure Gma made when i was still in high school and a fair bit skinnier, this dress seems a little big in the bust/torso. Have to figure out two things: 1) how to take in this dress for the best fit, and 2) whether to make a smaller size in the pattern or just to alter the pattern so that future dresses fit me better.

Maybe i’ll ask for Spoonflower gift money for Christmas so i can make a sundress out of this typewriter fabric.
