When i heard that someone thought we needed a remake of “Clash of the Titans,” i decided it was high time to re-watch the original. I’m a fan of Ray Harryhausen’s special effects anyway.

Bubo
And, ultimately, Harryhausen’s special effects were what made this thing actually enjoyable to watch. Bubo, the mechanical owl, was my favorite (of course).
Otherwise. MEH. I don’t remember loving this overmuch back in the ’80s (i think i saw it mid-’80s), so i wasn’t expecting much from this re-watch. I’m just saying — MEH.
What drove me crazy, tho’, and almost made the whole thing completely unwatchable was the deep sense of misogyny embedded in Greek mythology. Which, of course, intellectually i know is there. But being confronted with it face-to-face really made me itch.
In short: Go, Bubo!!
My memory is that the scene with Medusa in the temple is the only one with any real drama to it. Although if it was released in summer 1981, I was probably a little too old for it at a ripe old twenty. I caught it in the theater on its first run, for sure.
I’m probably too old at this point to find drama in any of it. Interestingly, tho’, even at this remove i do still find the special effects to be impressive. I like the 3D feel of real models over CGI (i also like the 3D feel of stop-motion animation). And, no, i haven’t seen “Avatar” yet.
