This was recommended to us by a friend at our book group. Andy’s becoming quite a fan of Oscar Wilde — the person, not necessarily any of his work, which i don’t believe Andy’s read. Perhaps some day Andy will become a fan of authors who aren’t very self-impressed, but like seeks like i suppose.
As to the movie. It was beautiful and wonderful and — .
And, oh god. Painful. So painful. Which, of course, i knew it would be, being already familiar with the history of Oscar Wilde and Bosie. Part-way thru’ i nearly gave up watching it because i hated to see it going where i knew it was going to go. We stuck it out to the end, tho’, because Stephen Fry was a very charming Wilde and Jude Law was a simply perfect Bosie.
In short: very good, i liked it, i will never watch it again.
My senior seminar class this semester is on Oscar Wilde, so I am reading a lot of his works. I’ve been debating whether or not to watch this, if only to lament the fact that The Picture of Dorian Gray was not made between the years of 1996-2004, when Jude Law was his prettiest.
