Ilse came to live with us because her people moved to Japan. Originally our friends were expecting to take all 4 of their cats, but by the saturday before they left they were having second thoughts about taking their 2 oldest cats. That’s when Andy and i walked in — literally. We stopped by the house to pick up a few more things and were greeted with, “Take whatever you want! Everything must go!!” Thinking they were still taking all 4 cats, i joked about grabbing one. Thinking we still had 3 cats, our friend told us we couldn’t have one.
Andy had said he was feeling more ready to take another cat into our house, but he wanted to wait for exactly the right time.
Ilse’s been making herself right at home. We started with a few days where she was sequestered in the bedroom and Andy and i slept upstairs in the loft. By wednesday night we were sleeping in the bedroom and leaving the door open while we slept so Eleanor and Fergus could come in if they wanted to, tho’ i’d still close Ilse in the bedroom while i was at work. I think friday of that week i left the bedroom door open when i left in the morning. Then we threw a houseguest into the mix.
And she’s just taken it all in stride. She seems to enjoy being around people, sometimes following me and purring when i come in after work. She hopped into our houseguest’s lap while he was reading one afternoon. The other cats will growl at her if she gets too close, but that “too close” distance is getting smaller bit by bit. She rarely hisses and growls at them anymore, unless they’re right up in her grill — which can take awhile, because she has depth perception problems and sometimes simply doesn’t realize there’s another cat there.
At this point she pretty much has the run of the main floor of the apartment. This morning, she was running around all of it like a rambunctious kitten.
We are completely besotted.
She can be hard to photograph because she turns her head just as the shutter closes, so here’s some video:
